Nicholas Kern was the first settler in the area which would become Slatington. He took up land as early as 1737. When he arrived he found the Lenni-Lenape Indians living along Trout Creek, and what was known as the "Warriors Path". He established a grist mill and a saw mill along Trout Creek in the year 1745. Benjamin Franklin reported to Governor Morris in January 1756, that he procured boards and timber from "Trucker's Sawmill" for use at Fort Allen at Weissport, PA. Trucker was a nickname given to Nicholas Kern, derived from the german word "Truckener" meaning joker or wit. There were no other settlers in the immediate area besides the Kerns until the discovery of Slate. The Kerns lived quietly as farmers and millers. In 1761 a public road was laid out along the path route of the old "Warriors Path." Now known as Route 873. The first quarry opened in 1845, and produced roofing slate. The slate factory was erected in 1847 for the production of slate mantels and slabs. In 1854, a covered wooden bridge was erected across the Lehigh River. The Lehigh Valley Railroad was later constructed along the river. In 1856 a hotel was built by the station. For a time this place was called "Liberty." From this beginning the town of Slatington grew. In April 1864 a petition was presented to the Court of Lehigh County asking for the incorporation of the town of Slatington into a borough. This request was granted on Sept. 7, 1864. For more historical information visit the libary.
